Worry is a potent emotion that can either inspire you to go beyond its crippling effects or stop you dead in your tracks, leaving you filled with a sense of overwhelming impending doom over the mere contemplation of all that could go wrong.
As what we focus on expands, worry can quickly plummet your vibration into a downward spiral, lowering your frequency and keeping you in a perpetual state of fear of the absolute worst that could happen. This post will explore how to stop worrying and stay present with mindfulness.
The Habit of Worrying
To love someone is to want the very best for them. In doing so, worry has long been associated with an expression of love from parents, spouses, friends, family, and practically everyone else in between. The more you love someone, the more you want the best for them, as one wouldn’t want any hurt, harm, or danger to come remotely close to the ones you love. So much so worry has become commonplace among family and friends. At any given time, we’re liable to feel the energy of fear, doubt, and worry rise, infiltrating every space of our being with the discomfort that rivals an impending sense of doom.
The very thought of coming face to face with the object of our fears sends our nervous system into a tailspin, as our body’s flight or fight response leaves us feeling so consumed and overwhelmed that it overwhelms our physical being. Like most things, all thoughts aren’t created equal, as they span the spectrum, from low to high vibrations, with disempowering thoughts that stem from fear, doubt, and worry, emitting some of the lowest frequencies.
For many, the fear of getting a dreaded call, or being on the receiving end of an eerie knock at the door in the middle of the night, is one of the worst things that could happen. From late-night news broadcasts reporting horrendous violent acts to the latest graphic live footage of yet another violent viral act, it all adds up, making us more fearful of all that could go wrong. Invariably the more we are exposed to the absolute worst that can happen, the more we increasingly fear it happening to ourselves and the ones we love, and where there are thoughts of fear, worry is sure to follow.
Worrying Demystified
Worry has long been associated with an expression of love. The more you love someone, the more likely you worry for their safety. Only universal law doesn’t quite work that way. Outwardly it seems only natural to fear the possibility that an unthinkable fate will come anywhere near the ones you love. Notably, fear and worry tend to go hand and hand; the more you fear, the likelihood that something will come to pass, and the more apt you are to mentally fantasize about what you do not want to happen.
To verbally say it out loud, it makes no sense that we actively engage in thoughts that play out the object of our fears down to the most minute detail. Even more surprising, we associate worrying with an expression of love. Interestingly, universal law doesn’t entirely operate on the level of what we don’t want to happen. It does the opposite, as it works at the level of what we’re most interested in. Admittingly, no one’s interested in manifesting the object of their fear (aka worry). However, persistently recycling disempowering thoughts that mentally rehearse the object of your fears does just that, as the universal law operates according to what you’re most interested in.
Everything is energy, as your energy flows where your attention flows. Beyond our best intent, energy operates according to vibrational frequency. Each thought emits a unit of energy that vibrates at a certain level (low or high). Disempowering thoughts emit a low frequency (worry) significantly lower than love (aka more elevated). Likewise, when one mentally rehearses what they don’t want to happen, universal law reads see it as something inviting into reality.
Everything Happens As You Believe
Everything is energy, and whether conscious or not, every thought we think and entertain generates an energetic vibration that magnetically attracts everything agreeable to its nature. We are all energetic beings with an innate creative facility to use the power of thought to co-create with universal intelligence. Since all thought is creative, every thought is a unit of energy that can shift our energetic frequency.
Think that you are continuously surrounded by unlimited opportunities for more health, love, joy, financial wealth, and abundance, and you will indeed be met with more of the same. Whereas, if you singularly focus on the absolute worst that could happen and mentally rehearse what you don’t want to happen constantly, you are sure to manifest the substance of your fears. Everything happens to you as you believe.
So if you are directing your energy by incessantly worrying, you will, in some way, form, or fashion, experience it on a mental and emotional (experience by way of your nervous system) level, immersing yourself into a downward spiral as you physiologically experience it as if the imagined reality has materialized. Hence, you will inherently reap what you sow.
Like most things we repeatedly do, worry is a habit of which you have the inner power and fortitude to change at will. Will it be easy? No. Is it likely that it will happen overnight? No. In the same way, it took a consistent, concerted effort to develop; it will, in turn, take increased awareness and persistent, intentional action to shift.
How does one go about doing just that? So glad you asked, with the power of awareness. Like most things, one cannot change something one does not know exists. The practice of mindfulness supports us to do just that.
3 Ways to Stop Worrying and Stay Present
Worrying is an inside job, as is the power to shift the content of your thoughts which is sourced from within. By nature, habits are repeated actions that become so deeply engrained within our subconscious that it slips beneath our awareness, making it much more nuanced to be conscious of all that is occurring. Much like, one can only change when they are aware of it. Hence, the first step to shifting your thought pattern is to increase your awareness of all that is taking place.
Anytime you feel that the low vibrational energy of fear and worry has highjacked your awareness, take a few moments to pause (aka stop) and observe all that is flowing through your attention. Take your power back, and observe how it feels to exist within your body; notice any thoughts that are passing through, and release any judgment, attachment, or resistance to what is at the present moment. Observe the natural rhythm and flow of the breath as it infuses your body with life-force energy as well as everything it needs to thrive.
Please take a few deep cleansing breaths by fully breathing into the base of your lungs, feeling your chest rise as it expands to receive the breath. Observe how and where you are directing your attention without judgment. If you are centering fear, doubt, worry, or ever-expanding good, notice how you are directing your energy. If your thoughts fall back into old habits, pause and go deeper into practice, taking deep cleansing breaths to disrupt the thought pattern and redirect your attention to what you seek to manifest (aka your intention).
Being that like attracts like, every thought that focuses on what you don’t want continuously elicits a low vibrational frequency that essentially keeps the cycle going. The good news is that no matter how long we subject ourselves to old habits of thought, we each possess the inner power to change at will and begin again, chartering a new course to invite more love, life, and joy. Drop into this practice as often as needed to reclaim your mind by refocusing your attention on your desired intent.
